Mexican Fan (Washingtonia Robusta)

|
This palm is native to Mexico and is the most commonly used palm in Southern California . This is a palm that is very hardy to both heat and cold, will tolerate any soil type and can handle poor drainage. The Mexican Fan is a fast grower and can reach a height of 80' (approximate 6'-12' trunk growth per year). This palm must be planted in full sun and it will become drought tolerant once it has become firmly established. The more water and heat this palm receives, the faster it will grow. The Mexican Palm does not have insect or disease problems. It is a thorny species, and the pruning of its dead bottom leaves difficult when 10' or taller.
Special Note: The Mexican Fan can go through severe transplant shock (bottom leaves die back), especially in hot weather. Keep plants wet for the first month after transplanting. Allow 8'-10' diameter planting area, 5' or more away from sidewalks and foundations.
