Sago Cycad (Cycus Revoluta)

|
This species is native to the tropics of Southeast Asia . This plant is characterized by its tough palm-like leaves. The Sago is a primitive cone-bearing plant that is related to conifers. It is a very slow grower with a small root system, which allows it to have a long pot life. The fronds on the Sago can reach 8' wide, and are grown as single or multi-trunk. The best growing ground for this plant is near the coast, where is receives full sun or only slight shade. The leaves on this plant will become a lighter green when it is in full sun, and will become darker green depending on how much shade it receives. This plant is hardy to heat and to frost conditions, but is does require good drainage with plenty of organic matter mixed into the soil. When raising one of these plants it is important to check frequently for for brown and white scales on the undersides of leaves. If found, these scales can be peeled or hosed off. Also, insecticides can burn the leaves on a Sago Cycad and this plant only needs to be mildly fertilized.
